Judges needed to volunteer for the 57th Annual Baltimore Science Fair
The ASQ Baltimore Section has once again been invited to participate in the 57th Annual Baltimore Science Fair (http://www.baltimoresciencefair.org) to be held at Towson University. As in past years, the Baltimore Section will provide volunteer judges and awards to students participating in the Baltimore Science Fair. The Section has been continuously supporting the Science Fair for about 20 years.
- Section members volunteer as independent judges for ASQ and earn Recertification Points.
- Judging takes place on Saturday, March 24th, at the Towson University Student Union. On Saturday, the commitment is from 8:30 AM until about 2 PM.
- The Awards Ceremony takes place on Sunday, March 25th. If you can assist in presenting the awards, the commitment is from 3:30 PM until about 5 PM at the Towson University Student Union.
- Judges from ASQ Baltimore will adjudicate the student exhibits for their use and understanding of statistical principles and statistical thinking and provide recognition awards.
- The Section will also recognizes teams of students for effectively working together to solve their chosen problem.

- Note, that this year, the Science Fair organization is also in need of sponsor judges in the Biology sciences, and if you are able to help, please contact Bob Bufano, Director of the BSF directly at
. Sponsor judges judge on behalf of a sponsor that is short of or does not provide judges, and is separate from the ASQ Baltimore judging.”
The Fair attracts winners of school and county-based science fairs from Maryland’s Baltimore Region. Students represent public and private schools and home schools. Students come from middle (Division 1) and high (Division 2) schools within Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard Counties and Baltimore City. The Fair is now operated by the non-profit Baltimore Science Fair Foundation and has been additionally sponsored by the following organizations: Towson University, Lockheed Martin Corp., Baltimore County Public Schools, Constellation Energy Group, and Howard Co Public Schools. The Baltimore Section of ASQ is a contributing supporter.

Winners from the Baltimore Science Fair will compete in the International Science & Engineering Fair to be held in May 13 – 18, 2012 in Pittsburgh PA.

MPEF Call for Examiners
To Supporters of the Maryland Performance Excellence Awards Program:
The MPEA Program needs Examiners now for its 2012 Awards cycle. If you are interested, please send the following information to Mike Novak, MPEA Program Director, at 
– Name – Contact information – Most recent experience as an Examiner.
Also please complete and send the attached short Examiner Application to Mike by February 10. This year’s training date is March 7 and the attached calendar shows other important dates for this year’s MPEA Program.
As you may know, 2011 was a great year for the MPEA Program. Southern Management Corporation won the highest Maryland Excellence Award, the Platinum Award. The MPEA Program received recognition from the National Baldrige Office at our awards ceremony when Harry Hertz presented an award to the MPEA Program for its first Baldrige National Quality Award winner, Montgomery County Public Schools. We are hoping to capitalize on these successes to elevate the MPEA Program to new heights, and your support as an Examiner this year will help us do just that.
