December 2018 Dinner Meeting – The Qualified Manufacturing Line

Information on the Tuesday, December 4, 2018 Dinner Meeting has been posted:

Venue: Conference Center at the Maritime Institute

Program: Inspection is that vital part of the operation that really does not add value. It is a cost manufacturers pay to reduce the risk inherent in delivering nonconforming product. A properly qualified process allows inspection personnel to monitor the process, not the product, with little or no interruption of product flow.
Process qualification is the documented process of validating the ability of a process to operate at an expected quality level during sustained operations. Data covering critical process parameters must be recorded and analyzed to ensure critical attributes can be reasonably guaranteed throughout production. This may include testing equipment at maximum operating capacity to demonstrate quality conformance at that level of production.
Once all controlling characteristics have been quantified, the manufacturer should have a full understanding of the process, a validated system may be implemented to routinely monitor those characteristics.
Equally important as qualifying processes and equipment is qualifying software and personnel. A well trained staff and accurate, thorough, records help ensure ongoing protection from process faults and rapid, orderly, recovery from process malfunctions.

Speaker:  Alan B. Metzel
Al is a Quality Engineer with Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, responsible for (among other things) nondestructive testing and high accuracy dimensional measurement. Having earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), he has worked as a manufacturing engineer in high speed sheet metal production, gear manufacturing, and the manufacture of armored vehicles.

Recognizing accepted international standards as the bedrock of trade and industry, Al serves on several standards groups. Among these are:
• ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative
• ASTM Smart Manufacturing Advisory Committee
• ASTM Committee on Nondestructive Testing
• ASTM Committee on Quality and Statistics
• Coordinate Metrology Society Certification Committee

Locally he serves on the Executive Board of the Cumberland Valley Chapter of SAE International, and the Washington County Public Schools Career Technology Education Advisory Committee

Tutorial: Qualified Manufacturing Line (QML)
The latest revisions of the ISO 9000 standards are based on risk assessment and mitigation. A properly implemented QML process provides the capability to minimize risk while, simultaneously, allowing inspection operations to be drastically reduced. This presentation will demonstrate the conceptual basis for the QML and the process for its development and implementation.
