Job Description

The Director of Quality Assurance is a senior manager, possessing excellent people management skills, and very strong process skills. The Director must have a very strong knowledge of the software development life-cycle, and must be able to manage and motivate the teams against very aggressive deadlines. The Director will have 4-6 direct reports, including Quality Assurance Managers and a Manager of Configuration Management. These Managers will cover a wide range of products and will have diverse responsibilities within the product development lifecycle. As a result, the Director must have a wide range of management and process skills, and must have in-depth knowledge of the product development life-cycle with a specific focus on Quality Assurance functions. The Director will report to the Vice President, Engineering and will be based in Columbia, MD.

Scope of Work

* Develops corporate and/or organizational policies as it relates to Quality Assurance and Configuration Management, and authorizes their implementation
* Provides general direction to and review of managers in the organization
* Works on abstract problems across functional areas of the business
* Identifies and evaluates fundamental problems through assessment of intangible variables
* Interacts internally and externally with executive level management requiring negotiation of extremely difficult matters to influence policy making
* Directs and controls the activities of several product development groups through senior managers with overall responsibility for the direction of those assigned areas

Job Responsibilities

* Drive the quality assurance process, integration/build process, and configuration management process for 3-4 software development groups. This responsibility includes helping to define priorities, establish timelines, allocate resources, and achieve team goals
* Provide leadership within the Development Organization to achieve assigned team goals and project milestones
* Provide day-to-day counseling and direction to the Managers
* Coach the Managers with regard to team issues, and intervene to solve team issues when necessary
* Work within the teams to resolve issues related to product requirements, software release dates, QA resources, and software quality
* Ensure that coordination is occurring across teams
* Deliver commercial software products on time, within budget, and with desired quality
* Identify and implement process improvements to increase overall product quality and reduce testing costs
* Function in a department leadership role, in the absence of the VP
* Represent the Development organization to other teams within Sourcefire, and to executive staff
* Contribute to the analysis and improvement of the software development life-cycle process, with specific focus on improving the QA process
* Install and configure all software products which fall under this person’s domain, to ensure completeness of scope, and quality of software
* Complete personnel performance reviews for all direct reports, and ensure that personnel reviews are completed for assigned team members
* Hiring and terminating decisions as related to all assigned teams (with HR and VP of Engineering approval)
* Determine staffing requirements, allocate staff accordingly, and ensure that projects are staffed to succeed
* Provide employee coaching and counseling
* Ensure that project deliverables are produced, including, but not limited to: quality assurance plans, test plans, testing priorities, status reports, user documentation, online help, etc.
* Manage and motivate teams to accomplish significant deliverables within tight deadlines
* Provide input to software design; evaluate software designs for “testability”
* Demonstrate leadership to go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver quality software
* Keep abreast of technical trends with regard to Quality Assurance and configuration management, and evaluate their value for improving our software delivery process
* Resolve process issues related to product delivery

Required Skills

Qualifications

* B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in Computer Science
* 10 years of software development experience in a commercial software environment
* At least 3 years of hands-on experience managing the Quality Assurance function
* At least 3 years of hands-on-experience managing Configuration Management functions, including responsibility for code repository and product recovery
* At least 3 years of experience in the Network Security market
* Proven experience in implementing software quality assurance processes, including the ability to put test theory into practice, establishing QA metrics and how they will be measured, and establishing a highly-productive QA team
* Proven experience in the field of Test Automation
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Excellent teamwork skills, with the ability to resolve team issues in a positive manner
* Proven capabilities of delivering quality commercial software products on time
* Proven experience in understanding and driving the software development process
* Experience in managing remote/off-shore teams
* Experience with anti-virus software is a plus
* Experience with Bugzilla, Mercury Interactive Quality Center, Quick Test, Spirent, CVS
