May 2019 Dinner Meeting –  The Baldrige Excellence Framework

Program: The Baldrige Excellence Framework
The Baldrige Excellence Framework includes the Criteria for Performance Excellence, core values and concepts, and guidelines for evaluating your processes and results.

Speaker: LaWanda Burwell
LaWanda Burwell works at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Center for Clinical Standards and Quality in the Quality Measurement and Value-Based Incentives Group. She serves as a subject matter expert on Health Insurance Marketplace Teams implementing quality requirements of the Affordable Care Act and the improvement and innovation of health care quality measures.
She completed her Doctorate of Science in Maternal and Child Health at Harvard School of Public Health. A former director of strategic planning, she has led organizational strategic planning, and provided consulting services for a organizations. She is an almost 20-year member of the Board of Examiners of the national Baldrige Performance Excellence Program and is President of the Board of the Directors of the Maryland Performance Excellence Foundation.

Tutorial: Overview of the U.S. Government Role Food Safety and Quality
This short presentation is intended to provide an overview of the U.S. Government’s role in food safety and quality focusing on the following questions: What agencies regulate food safety? What is the government’s role in food quality? How does the FDA Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) play a role in food manufacturer’s food safety programs? FSMA incorporates tools we have recently reviewed, including risk assessment and supplier programs.

Speaker: Lydia Berry
Lydia recently retired from a 40 year career with the United States Department of Agriculture. A majority of her time was working for the Agricultural Marketing Service performing inspections of processed fruit and vegetable products. As a supervisor, she was responsible for training staff and ensuring uniform interpretation and application of grade standards and department policy. She accepted promotions to headquarters in Washington DC, developing and revising grade standards and tools to assist inspectors, and managed audit programs assessing processors’ compliance with FDA current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs).
